About Bhai Dooj
Bhai Dooj is a Hindu Festival which is celebrated on the second lunar day of Shukla Paksha of the Kartika month of Vikram Samvat Hindu Calendar. The celebration of Bhai Dooj is just like Rakshabandhan, on this day, the sister applies a Tilak and prays for the long life of their brothers. In return, brother bringing her presents and gifts for all the toils the sister does for him.
It is known by different names in different part of the country. The different names are Bhai Teeka, Yam Dwitiya, Bharat Dwitiya, etc. In Northern India, it is called Bhai Dooj, In Maharashtra & Gujarat it is called Bhau Beej and in Bengal, it is called by the name of Bhai Phonta.
Meaning of Bhai Dooj
The Festival of Bhai Dooj has a literal meaning attached to it. Bhai Dooj made up of two words Bhai + Dooj, where Bhai means brother and Dooj means the second day after the new moon which is a day of its celebration.
Why Bhai Dooj is Celebrated
There is some mythology, which described the reason, why Bhai Dooj is celebrated, and the history of Bhai Dooj. The same is given as under-
Lord Yamraj Mythology- One Day, Lord Yama (The god of death) visit to the house of his sister Yami. She welcomes him with Aarti and put tilak on the forehead of Yamraj. Yami also offered some sweets and special treats to Yamraj. In return, Yam also gives a present gift and signified his love and affection towards her.
Overwhelmed by his sister’s love, Yamraj declared that any brother who would receive and aarti, tilak, and sweets from his sister on this day will never be afraid of death.
This is another reason that Bhai Dooj is also called and celebrated as “Yama Dwitiya”.
Lord Krishana Mythology- On this day Lord Krishana visited his sister, Subhadra after killing demon Narkasur. Her sister gives him a warm welcome with flowers and sweets. Subhadra also applied the tilak on the forehead of his brother, Krishana. This is the reason, the festival of Bhai Dooj was born.
Significance of Bhai Dooj
The day of Bhai Dooj holds special significance into the lives of brother and sister. This auspicious occasion celebrates the strong bonding between two opposite-sex siblings. The wonderful festival in an important occasion that can define the eternal love between siblings. On this day, the brother goes to their sister’s house (if she is married). Sister performed aarti, put a Tilak on the forehead of his brother, and also offer some sweets. In return, the brother shows his love and gives her a gift. On this day sister also cook for their brother and feed their brother with many sweets.
